An emotional and powerful prayer service took place Thursday night at the Western Wall plaza in Jerusalem, as more than 50,000 people gathered for the fourth major Selichot service since the start of the Hebrew month of Elul. The plaza was packed to capacity with worshippers from across the country who came to pour out their hearts and ask for mercy and forgiveness ahead of the High Holidays. This year has seen a notable spiritual awakening among the broader public, reflected in the thousands arriving each night at the remnant of our Holy Temple.
Since the beginning of Elul—just the first half of the month—more than 350,000 worshippers have already participated in various Selichot services at the plaza. This year marks a significant increase in attendance compared to previous years. The surge is evident not only at the organized central services but also night after night, as thousands arrive independently to recite Selichot and stream en masse to the Western Wall. Due to last night’s full capacity, hundreds of worshippers remained outside the plaza.
During last night’s uplifting service, Mordechai (Suli) Eliav, CEO of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, led the crowd of tens of thousands in emotional prayers and heartfelt cries for the safety and success of IDF soldiers and security forces, for national unity, and for Israel’s peace and security. The Western Wall Heritage Foundation is preparing for the continued arrival of hundreds of thousands throughout the Days of Mercy and Selichot.
