Iran is preparing for the next round of fighting and overhauling the role of its Basij paramilitary force. According to Qatari media reports, ‘Supreme Leader’ Mojtaba Khamenei appointed a new commander for the organization and laid out requirements for change. An Iranian expert added: “The change indicates that the leadership shift is part of a new approach the regime is adopting toward senior commanders.”
Qatari media reported Wednesday that Iran is trying to adapt the Basij’s capabilities to security demands that changed following the war. For this mission, Iran recruited conservative cleric Hossein Taeb (69), a veteran security figure, who will lead the organization and ensure its redefinition.
1+In his appointment decree, one of six orders appointing senior military commanders, Mojtaba Khamenei outlined four central demands from the new Basij chief, considering the country’s new circumstances:
- Deepen Basij culture and resistance to embed the slogan “Every Iranian is a Basij member,” aimed at promoting the building of a strong and united Iran.
- Strengthen the popular intelligence network and develop skills to deal with “enemy threats.”
- Active cooperation with government institutions and mosques to develop impactful social services.
- Promote Basij culture as a global model of resistance against rivals and superpowers.
The Basij organization, established in the early years of the Islamic Revolution over four decades ago, forms the core of social support for the militia. Basij members are employed in most state institutions, giving the organization significant presence in various offices and agencies. While most Basij members are unarmed volunteers, some Basij bases scattered throughout Iranian cities are equipped with military gear and maintain armed personnel.

An Iranian expert who spoke with Qatari media said he believes the appointment decree issued by Mojtaba, emphasizing “strengthening the popular intelligence network,” utilizing modern technologies, training and preparing to deal with threats, and the slogan “Every Iranian is a Basij member,” elevates the appointment beyond a typical administrative or military change.
The expert further claimed that Taeb’s return to lead the Basij under Mojtaba Khamenei could also be part of a process of updating and rebuilding the network of power loyal to the new leadership, as this step shows that security trust has become a decisive criterion in current appointments and arrangements.
