Beachgoers in Eilat got an unusual sight Sunday when an Israeli Navy submarine surfaced just offshore, cruising in full view near the crowded beach as part of what the military described as operational activity in the area.
The appearance comes amid a sharp regional escalation that includes Iranian fire toward nearby Aqaba, Jordan, and widespread Iranian attacks across the Middle East.
The sighting of a Dolphin-class submarine—one of Israel’s most secretive and strategic military assets—operating openly above water, especially near a civilian area, is extremely rare and carries what analysts say is a clear deterrent message.
The Dolphin submarine is considered Israel’s long arm. According to foreign reports, it can carry cruise missiles and forms a central component of Israel’s “second-strike capability.” Its presence in the Gulf of Eilat suggests a possible transit through the Suez Canal (coordinated with Egypt) en route to operational missions in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab strait facing the Houthi threat, or even farther—off the coast of Iran.
The Eilat footage comes against a backdrop of peak tensions in the southern sector. Earlier Sunday, an IDF spokesman said launches were detected from Iran toward the Jordanian city of Aqaba, adjacent to Eilat. Loud explosions were heard in the Eilat area following interceptions carried out by the U.S. military and the Iron Dome system.
The current Iranian attack is part of a broad wave of strikes directed at various targets across the Middle East, apparently in response to American actions against Tehran. Beyond Jordan, Iran has also struck Kuwait in the past 24 hours, where electricity and water infrastructure were bombed, and Saudi Arabia.
The confrontation is taking a heavy toll in lives as well: The U.S. Embassy in Jordan issued an urgent security alert after direct hits on a military base in the kingdom, in which two American soldiers were killed and another soldier was declared missing. According to CBS reports, the number of American deaths in the current campaign against Iran and its proxies now stands at 16 soldiers.
The Eilat municipality said there is currently no change in Home Front Command guidelines, but security forces in the sector are on high alert. The submarine’s presence in the area underscores that Israel is not standing on the sidelines and is positioning its strategic capabilities at the forefront of the naval battle.
