Jordan’s government spokesman said Sunday that no decision has been made to evacuate the international airport or seaport in the city of Aqaba. According to the spokesman, no potential threat to Jordanian territory has been identified in recent hours.
The Jordanian statement came in response to an urgent security alert issued earlier Sunday by the U.S. Embassy in Amman. The embassy’s notice claimed that Jordanian authorities had evacuated the airport and seaport in Aqaba due to a specific and credible threat.
The embassy advised American citizens to avoid the area entirely and follow instructions from local security officials. In addition to the focused warning about Aqaba, the U.S. Embassy reiterated its recommendation that American citizens avoid traveling to military bases throughout Jordan.
